What is a Soul Mate?

In order to answer the question “What is a soul mate?” it is helpful to take a look at what it is not. Basically, there are two types of romantic relationships: the “romantic learning experience” and the “romantic soul mate relationship” and the two are worlds apart. The “romantic learning experience” is the one relationship that most of us know all too much about because it is the one that we attract as we are working through our major issues. It is characterized by miscommunication, confusion and sometimes abuse. In short, you will attract the lessons that you need to learn and you will learn those lessons while you are involved in this type of relationship.

A “soul mate relationship” is the relationship that you attract when that you have worked through all of your major issues. By "major issues", I am talking about things like addictions, fear of commitment, trust issues and jealousy. In fact, one way that you can tell whether you are still working on some major issues is simply by looking at the current relationships in your life- not just the romantic ones, but also your relationships with family members and friends as well. If you find that you continuously attract the same dysfunction such as commitment phobic’s, chances are that you also have a fear of commitment. The learning experience relationships are wonderful for showing us exactly what issues we still need to work on if we can look at ourselves honestly.

Now let's get back to the soul mate relationship. The soul mate relationship, in contrast to the “romantic learning relationship” is the relationship that you attract once you have worked through your major issues. Your Soul Mate is what you have waited for and worked for; the reward for a job well done. This relationship will go so smoothly and will feel so natural because you both have worked through your major issues and are more enlightened spiritually.

When you meet a soul mate you will likely feel immediately that you've known this person before and the relationship usually moves very, very quickly. In fact the relationship may move so quickly that your friends and family members may be very concerned. They may question whether you are making the right decision in moving so quickly with this person; after all you barely know each other. But the truth is, the reason why you feel so comfortable with your soul mate is because you have known this person in many lifetimes.
